Proposition 65

California’s Proposition 65 – officially known as the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986 – was enacted as a ballot initiative in November 1986. Its main purpose is to protect the state’s drinking water sources from contamination by any chemicals purported to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm. Proposition 65 requires businesses to inform Californians about potential exposures to such chemicals.

A Proposition 65 warning does not necessarily mean a product is in violation of any product-safety standards or requirements.
